Bogota, Bogota Capital District officially abbreviated Bogotá , DC (during the Spanish colonial era from 1991 to 2000 called Santa Fé de Bogotá ) is the capital of the Republic of Colombia and the department of Cundinamarca.
It consists of 20 villages and is the political , economic epicenter ,
administrative , industrial, artistic, cultural, sports and tourism of the country.
It is located in central Colombia , in the natural region known as the savannah of Bogota , which is part of cundiboyacense plateau, mountain formation located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. It is the third highest capital in South America (after La Paz and Quito) , at an average 2625 meters above sea level. It owns the largest moorland of the world, located in the town of Sumapaz .
According to 2014 estimates , Bogotá has a population of 7,776,845 inhabitants. It has a length of 33 km from south to north , and 16 km from east to occidente.14 As the capital , houses the bodies of senior , legislative (Congress of Colombia ) executive and judicial branch (Casa de Nariño ) (Supreme Court Justice , Constitutional Court, Council of State and the Superior Council of the Judiciary ) .
The important cultural offer is represented in many museums , theaters and libraries , that have given the recognition of the " Athens of South America " 23 and the Ibero-American Capital of Culture 2007.24 also is home to major festivals wide work and national and international recognition. Academic activity is also highlighted , as most of the major Colombian universities are based in the city. It is noteworthy that Unesco granted the city the title of World Book Capital 2007 and in March 2012 appointed as the " City of Music " as part of the Creative Cities Network of the organization.
